Author David Vann Receives Distinguished Honors for His Story Collection, Legend of a Suicide

In his first story collection, Vann leads the reader to vital places while exorcizing demons born from the suicide of his father.—The New York Times, 100 Notable Books of 2008

With his story collection Legend of a Suicide, Cornell Alum and former Cornell Assistant Professor, David Vann, has won praise for his riveting book, which was released this year.  In addition to receiving the noteworthy honor of being named one of The New York Times “100 Notable Books of 2008,” the collection also received a full review in the November 28 issue of the publication (with a reprint in the International Herald Tribune.)

If that honor weren’t enough Legend of a Suicide was also named one of the “Top Ten Story Collections of 2008” by the Kansas City Star, and is the winner of the Grace Paley Prize, awarded by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.

To celebrate his success, Vann has scheduled a national reading tour with four exclusive dates scheduled in the Bay Area, listed below.

Additional praise for Legend of a Suicide:

“Vann uses startling powers of observation to create strong characters, tense scenes and genuine surprises.”--Publishers Weekly

"This is one of the most striking fictional debuts in recent memory, and David Vann is an important new voice in American literature."--Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain

"As the title suggests, the stories in Legend of a Suicide approach a private mythos, revisiting, reinvestigating and reinventing one family's broken past.  They also transport us to wild, uncharted places on the Alaskan coast and in the American soul.  Throughout, David Vann is a generous, surehanded guide in some very dangerous territory."--Stewart O'Nan
